Beneficiary from Benin
My name is Rebecca, I am a widow and I am raising my children alone in Sonta, a village located in the northern part of Benin. Life was very hard for me before. I did not know if my children would have enough to eat and even a minor illness could swallow up all my family savings.
I could start a little company specialized in the production and sale of fritters partially thanks to the help I received from Louvain Coopération. I am now able to feed my family and allocate part of my income to health insurance to protect my children from falling ill.
I live in a more serene atmosphere nowadays. Unfortunately, hundreds of families do not have such luck. In the region where I live, malnutrition and bad access to health care still have devastating effects.
Household incomes must therefore increase so that families can afford quality health care without running into debt.
Beneficiary from Burundi
My name is Janvière, I am a widow and I live with my four children in Ngozi, located in Mwumba city. I attended information sessions when Louvain Coopération started training villagers on sustainable farming methods.
I then participated in an exchange visit to another Burundi province where banana farming had been promoted. There, I realized that the aid program had enabled households to increase their income and to have all they needed to eat.
Back home, I decided to buy five banana seedlings as well as voluble beans seedlings. With these two crops, I could increase my production, not only for my family’s own consumption but also for sale. Thanks to this new income, I could send my four children to school and feed them properly, with quality foods.
I do not intend to stop here, I have now become the leader of my agricultural association and I also joined the “Forum des Paysans du Burundi” (Burundi Farmers’ Forum), an organization that lobbies the government to improve farmers’ rights.
Beneficiary from Congo
My name is Christian and like many other Kinshasa children, I was kicked out after my new stepmother settled at home.
I left my home, family and classmates behind to live on the street. I had to fight hunger, diseases and violence every day.
A few months ago, I finally pushed the door of a drop-in center supported by Louvain Coopération open. I have since then reconnected with my parents and will go back to school in September 2016!”
